Bijagua Sloth Search and Discovery

Experience one of Guanacaste’s greatest natural wonders: sloths in their native habitat. Plus a refreshing stop at the beautiful Cortez waterfalls along the way. Located just off the Pan American Highway, you will stop at the falls, where you can dip in the natural pool, sunbathe and relish the forest beauty and refreshing running spring water, abundant even in Costa Rica's dry season. Then comes the core adventure. Driving from the driest Guanacaste lowlands at the base of majestic active volcanoes, snaking between the giant Miravalles and Tenorio volcanos, you will cross the continental divide and enter into Bijagua. Bijagua means “two waters,” and is named after the influence of the climate and the rain on the area. This is a nature hikers' paradise, replete with the biodiversity for which Costa Rica is famous. And, of course, sloths abound. They're everywhere, hanging from the trees and branches, always "smiling." Usually, mothers will be carrying their babies. Bijagua also provides the perfect climate and rainforest environment for you to come upon exotic reptiles and frogs, like the Red Eyed Frog, Green-and-Black Poison Arrow Frog, Blue Jeans Frog and many other examples of tropical wildlife, as well. For sloth and wildlife lovers in general, put this on your “Must-Do” list while visiting Costa Rica. After all that hiking and spotting sloths and local fauna in your rainforest exploration, why not take a break and enjoy a complimentary traditional Costa Rica buffet lunch prepared by our local chefs and cooks.

Palo Verde Wildlife River Boat Cruise

The Palo Verde National Park tour in Guanacaste, Costa Rica is usually on everyone's must-see list when visiting the Guanacaste Region. Your day starts early as we pick you up from your hotel or condo and drive you to one of the rarest and bio-diverse ecosystems in the world. Recommended for those who seek wildlife and birdlife. Palo Verde comprises dry forest, wetland and mangrove swamps, which is an ideal habitat for Costa Rican crocodiles, monkeys, iguanas, parrots, and other exotic birds. The Palo Verde Tour carries you through one of the largest concentrations of waterfowl in Central America. After the tour enjoy a typical Costa Rica lunch at a local restaurant and then enjoy a short tour of the how pottery is produced in nearby villages. The Palo Verde National Park Riverboat Tour takes place along a stretch of the Tempisque River Conservation Area in Guanacaste Province, 30 km west of Canas, Guanacaste, Costa Rica. The surrounding region is mostly tropical dry forest, and the Park focuses on conserving vital floodplain, marshes, limestone ridges and seasonal pools from the encroachment of civilization to mitigate the risk to the ecology. A major feature is the density and variety of bird species, a substantial factor that led to the creation of the reserve, due in part to its diverse ecology: 15 different topographical zones ranging from evergreen forests to mangrove swamps. Birds spotted regularly in the park include Great Curassows, Scarlet Macaws, White Ibis, Roseate Spoonbills, Anhingas, Jabirus, and Wood Storks, among many others.

Puma & Sloth Sanctuary Journey

To start your best outdoor, wildlife adventure day, we will pick you up from your hotel and drive approximately 45 minutes to the outskirts of the town of Cañas for a walking tour around the rescue shelter. Las Pumas is the largest animal shelter in Latin America, housing big cats such as pumas, jaguars and monkeys, deer and even toucans. It's a nature and animal lovers' paradise, with a myriad of trails to follow. After this great kickoff to your day, it'll be a quick stop along the way to the town of Bijagua to enjoy a delicious Costa Rican lunch — right before entering "sloth territory." Bijagua is a special place to observe the two different kinds of sloths in Costa Rica: both the two- and three-toed species. Located on the Caribbean slopes of the Miravalles and Tenorio volcanos, the panoramic views of Costa Rica's topography are amazing, something you'll only discover by traveling through the country's mountains, across or down its rivers. In this magical place, you can also see Blue-jeans frogs, the Green and Black Poison Dart frog and the most famous of all, the Red-eyed Tree frog in memorable and pristine rainforest locations. Needless to say, the absolute highlight of the experience is spotting this plethora of wildlife in natural and unique habitat — yet enjoying the view from safe observation areas. Definitely a Costa Rica "Must Do."
