The park focuses on conserving vital floodplains, marshes, limestone ridges, and seasonal pools from the encroachment of civilization to mitigate the risk to the ecology. A major feature is the density and variety of bird species, a substantial factor that led to the creation of the reserve, due in part to its diverse ecology.

Las Pumas refuge is the largest animal shelter in Latin America, housing big cats such as pumas and jaguars, but also monkeys, tropical birds, and others. Las Pumas rescues animals that will no longer be able to survive in the wild and gives them a home. It's also a nature lovers' paradise, with a myriad of trails to follow. After this great kickoff to your day, it'll be a quick drive to the town of Bijagua to enjoy a delicious Costa Rican lunch before entering "sloth territory."    Bijagua is a special place to observe the two different kinds of sloths in Costa Rica: both the two-toed and three-toed species. Many birding groups have identified over 100 species in a single day's outing in various Costa Rican locations; 150-species days have been reported. Some highlights are Quetzals, Macaws, Toucans, Tanagers, Eagles, aquatic birds, hummingbirds and Manakins.

In the midst of the rainforest exists one of the most photographed waterfalls in the world. “Los Teñideros” lies at the end of one of the most beautiful rivers of Costa Rica. the Rio Celeste. Los Teñideros is located where two streams of crystalline water merge into one. The mix between the minerals of the river and the minerals from the volcano crater create the famous celestial blue hue that gives the river its name when the sunlight reflects off of the high mineral content of the waters. It is within the composition of the water which contains the colloidal silica that is reflected off the sunlight and fool the human eye by returning an image of turquoise blue suspended in the water. The Rio Celeste waterfall has been recognized as one of the seven natural wonders of Costa Rica - a must see when in Guanacaste. Did you know that located within the park and covered by a dense cloud forest lies the Tenorio Volcano? But don’t worry it’s been dormant for years.
